It’s never too late to follow your heart

Ever had one of those days where you felt ‘That’s it! It’s over. I have hit a dead end!’? Ever felt that you just do not have the strength to go on? Ever felt that you’ve hit rock-bottom and you’re never gonna recover from it?

Well, let me tell you this. You are not alone. Most of us have had these thoughts at some point in our lives. But what happens next depends on each individual. You can either keep cursing your fate or find a better way to deal with it. And know this, no matter how bad the situation, there is ALWAYS a way out.

As a kid, I used to read a lot (I still do). Even developed a liking towards writing. I found that of all the subjects, I liked English the most. But it’s not really a subject, just a ‘language’. After 12th I wanted to take up journalism. Now we all know what that phase is like. Each and every person you meet has got some career advice for you. Be it your neighbours, your parents’ friends/colleagues or even some relatives who did not even exist (at least you were not aware that they did) until that point. So these “well-wishers” have just one thing to say. ‘Engineering or medicine. Choose one. Rest of the things are not meant for you’. There was even one person who said ‘Journalism is not for girls. It’s too difficult’.

Needless to say I ended up a B.E graduate working in a multi national company. Sure felt good. Salary in hand, working for just 5 days a week, enjoying weekends… But somewhere there was a feeling that I’m missing out on what I’m passionate about. Very few of us are lucky enough to make a profession out of our hobby. So what do you do when you are not one of those? Well, just don’t give up on your hobbies.

Love singing? Record a song and share it on the net. Love photography? Post your pictures on the net with interesting captions. Why do I say share? It feels good to be appreciated for something you actually care about. And you never know what opportunities will come knocking on your door.

Me? I decided to start blogging. Credit goes to my brother (my true well-wisher). He said “Stop with the excuses. It’s high time you do something for yourself. Need not be big. Just start. And if you enjoy it, you will find time to do it even with your busy schedule”.

So go ahead, follow your heart. When you are passionate about something it’s never too late.

    This is a great start! Even for a person like me who doesn’t like to read more than 2 paragraphs, loved every bit of it…!

  3. Hey Sindhuja, 6 years ago I set out to express myself with pretty much the same thought. I did start a blog. It has been over 2 years now that I last updated it. my passion for writing or English as a language hasn’t dwindled a little. But I don’t quite buy the idea that , if you are truly passionate about something, you will make time for it. Life is such that, you end up embracing things which you thought you detested. As you grow , your responsibilities towards life also grow. There are times when you will have to prioritize certain things over passion. You will go through one such phase as well. I am not dissuading you from writing your blog. Writing is divine. The purest form of expression. I am only throwing light on your thought process about this thing, having gone through a similar thing. Most importantly, how many times have you thought about an actual career in journalism ? Do you think you knew at 18 what it took to be a journalist and how a journalist’s career would be ?. To add on,Dont you think there are frustrated journalists who are most passionate about what they do but equally frustrated with their job ?. The truth is that you will never find a career in life that will always keep you happy and excited. Such is life. Boredom, the deadend you are talking about is just a phase in your life. It may in some cases lead some people to make a decision that would change their life, but there is a vast majority out there who do perfectly fine doing the same thing, after a brief lull. So when people actually advise you about a career, be it unsolicited mostly, they are most likely to suggest something that is well known to them or well understood at least. They simply wouldn’t have encouraged you take up journalism because they don’t know enough about it. As you grow old, you will understand that unsolicited advices are not always obnoxious, but you will learn to be selective and filter out what you need. If you are really passionate about this, I suggest you research on some of the schools that have a master’s degree in mass communication , media studies, or journalism. It is never too late as you have said. That is the right way to channelize your passion. In the end, I have the same thing to tell you as your brother did. If you are really passionate about it, you will take a decision to join one of these programs.

    1. Hi Amit, I do agree with you. I have totally gotten used to being a software engineer. But every time I hit a roadblock the very first thought that crosses my mind is ‘This was not my choice’. It’s a different thing that I do overcome those obstacles, but had it been in a career of my choice my attitude towards it would have been different. I could skip the phase of complaining and jump directly to find a solution to the problem at hand. Over time I have learned to deal with that ‘complaining phase’. But the point I was trying to make is, if you are frustrated with your job, spare some time to do what you like. It helps dealing with things in a better way. As far as my career in journalism goes, I know it’s not what I thought about it when I was 18. And you are also right in saying about priorities in life. That’s where I am now. To me, writing is just an outlet to get away from this boredom. And hence I decided to start a blog. Let’s hope I do continue.
